How Does Avanquest Bookkeeper 2010 Compare?

Avanquest is a leading developer and publisher of consumer and business solutions software. Founded 20 years ago, it now provides over 1,500 software titles.

Bookkeeper 2010 offers all the main functions needed in an accounting software package such as billing & invoicing; general ledger, payables and receivables; payroll & timesheets; inventory management; job tracking & budgeting; and reports, and at a lower price than other small business accounting programs. It doesn't have some of the extensive features of QuickBooks or Peachtree but works very well for home businesses or smaller businesses (e.g. less than 10 employees).

There is a very intuitive user interface. All key financial information is displayed in one searchable screen. The Startup Wizard sets up your company data. Bookkeeper 2010 also offers a great manager tool which provides alerts for pending & recurring transactions, and displays daily "to-do" reminders.

Three months of credit card processing is included free. Two methods to process credit card transactions are offered: keyed transactions (for mail, phone & internet orders); or swiped transactions (for face-to-face transactions) with the use of a card reader.

Bookkeeper 2010 doesn't integrate to Word (e.g. for client mass mailings) so if you would like that feature consider bookkeeping software Peachtree First Accounting 2010 ($99.99). Online banking isn't available but neither do the competitors' basic versions offer that service.

QuickBooks Simple Start Plus 2010 ($99.95) is also another option to consider. It has the added advantage of offering tax categories which helps to report tax-related income & expenses for income tax return preparation.

What we liked about Bookkeeper 2010 is the number of custom reports available - 125 compared to 14 for QuickBooks' basic version and 35 for Peachtree's basic version. These can be customized by date range and other variables. We also liked the inventory control tool which neither QuickBooks Simple Start Plus nor Peachtree First Accounting provide. It doesn't set multiple inventory price levels but it does give handy alerts to avoid product stock depletion. You can also generate purchase orders unlike the other two software programs.

It's also possible to process payroll - payroll tax tables require an additional subscription fee which is only $15 (see special offer above).
