A Few Considerations for Printing Checks
MICR Fonts
Checks display account information (on the bottom of the check) which must be printed in a special MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) font. This MICR line (which must be of a certain size and placement) is read by an MICR scanner in order to process the checks. MICR font is not a standard Windows font. However check writing software packages will include it or you can also purchase separately.
If wishing to print checks from accounting programs such as Peachtree or Quicken & Quickbooks that they do not include the MICR font and therefore require that you purchase pre-printed checks encoded with the MICR line first.
Magnetic Toner
Magnetic toner must be used to print the MICR line as this allows the scanners to detect all the account information even if signatures or processing stamps & marks may occur on top. Magnetic toner cartridges are preferable over MICR ink ones because magnetic particles in an ink cartridge can settle on the bottom, resulting in possible poor scanning results. However VersaCheck does sell MICR ink for inkjet printers. MICR toner is regarded as being preferable.
You can first print out the check template with MICR toner and then pass it through the printer a second time using normal toner with the remaining check details complete. You can also print the entire check with the magnetic toner if you wish as this should only result in a minimal cost increase.
Note that if MICR requirements are not followed, the check will need to be processed manually. This can result in fees for either or both you and the payee, as well as creating payment delays.
Check Stock
Checks should be printed on 24 pound secure check stock which will contain security features that make it difficult for others to alter the check. The stock should normally cost half that of pre-printed personalized blank check stock.
