TurboTax Tax Preparation Software

For the 2009 tax season, Intuit has not increased prices of their desktop or online programs, however their e-filing charges have gone up by a few dollars. If including state programs and e-filing for both federal and state returns, TurboTax online versions come out cheaper than the equivalent desktop versions.

H&R Block Tax Preparation Software

This year H&R Block have rebranded and updated the names of their tax software programs. They've dropped the TaxCut name and are now known as H&R Block At Home. Packaging has been redesigned making it clearer which program version suits which type of filer. There is also a new cleaner program interface.

There's also a new Deluxe version, which offers guidance for homeowners and investors (Premium is for self-employed and rental property owners).

H&R Block have simplified their desktop program selections and price structures somewhat. The desktop programs now include state returns (rather than offering each separate version with or without state, which they did last year). This makes it easier to compare prices to TurboTax which includes a state return in its desktop programs. As for price increases, the H&R Block Premium desktop program costs $10 more this year. Premium Online has also increased by $10 and now costs the same as TurboTax's Premier Online.

TaxCut Home & Business is now known as H&R Block At Home Premium & Business.

Unlike TurboTax, when including state returns and both federal and state e-filing costs, H&R Block desktop and online programs cost about the same, so there's no price advantage in choosing one over the other.

When comparing TurboTax and H&R Block, H&R Block At Home does come up as the more affordable tax software option this year, but TurboTax is reportedly still more user-friendly.
