Description
CompleteTax comes in two version - Premium and Basic (for simple returns, $9.95). The Premium version is for those who will be itemizing deductions, for homeowners and those with investments. CompleteTax is automatically updated with the most recent tax laws and will check your return for errors.
You can import the data from your last year's CompleteTax return, as well as data from GainsKeeper for easy calculation of capital gains and losses on Schedule D.
CompleteTax does not contain a forms view - you need to use the interview format to get to the data entry screens. The program begins by asking questions about your financial situation. The personal information section of the questionnaire groups multiple questions onto each screen, cutting back on excess clicking. It then builds a screen with tabs representing the major sections you'll need to work through, such as Employment and Real Estate. You can also use a navigational index that lays out your path. You'll get a checklist of sections that are complete, incomplete, and still to be started and you'll need to make sure you mark each completed page as done, so the program knows there's no more work to do.
CompleteTax contains a comprehensive help center. The site provides tabbed sections for each relevant tax issue and many terms are hyperlinked to explanations. There are also some "Help Me" links for various tax questions. There's a searchable FAQs section for common questions and the Q&As related to the current interview sections are displayed on the right. The program allows you to split your tax refund by direct deposit in up to three bank or retirement accounts, and pay your preparation fee from your refund (processing fee $19.95). And if after completing your return you discover that you owe a balance on your taxes, Complete Tax allows you to pay the amount online with a credit card (fee of 2.49% of the amount of your Federal tax payment; fee for State payments vary), or you can pay the balance due for your federal and certain state taxes from your bank account (no additional fee).
