How Does Mvelopes Personal 3.0 Compare?
Mvelopes is an online envelope budgeting system which was named one of “The 100 Best Products of 2006” by PC World magazine. It takes a different approach from most other personal finance programs in that it helps you spend money after you've earned it rather than before.
For ease of use, a guided setup helps users setup all their financial information in Mvelopes, with tutorials and an online manual provided. There's access to a community forum and a monthly online newsletter with further tips and information on getting the most out of Mvelopes and organizing finances.
Paychecks are then divided into envelope spending categories (rent, gas, groceries, savings) determined by the user. Transactions are downloaded from bank and credit card accounts (over 12,000 institutions supported) daily and as money is spent throughout the month, the corresponding envelopes decrease automatically. Once an envelope is empty spending must stop or funds can be used from another envelope, if any remaining. Balances carry over from month to month.
Users can also pay bills online. 15 payments each month are included, after that each additional payment is $0.50. Mvelopes can pay recurring bills automatically and reminders of bills due can be set up to avoid incurring further charges. If a company/individual does not accept electronic payments, the program will even print and mail checks. Users can also set automatic monthly transfers to savings accounts.
Mvelopes has a summary page view which displays Net Worth. There are also 16 available reports which can be viewed in the browser, by PDF or exported to a spreadsheet format.
Users can view all their financial information and assign transactions from anywhere with an internet connection (Mac and PC) and through mobile phone access. The system uses 128-bit secure socket layer encryption and information is stored on firewall-protected web servers.
