Wesabe has just launched its convenient Windows Vista Gadget which provides instant access to real-time bank/credit card account balances and recent transactions in the Windows Vista Sidebar. Financial balances continuously update, saving users from having to log into individual bank sites to check balances. The Wesabe Vista Gadget can be downloaded in just a few moments from the Wesabe site.
Wesabe, created in 2006, is a social networking, online budgeting website which helps users track their spending and set financial goals. Users sign up (membership is free) and upload bank data to the site (anonymously) along with thousands of other members. More than 6,000 financial institutions in more than 30 countries are supported.
Users can see where their money is going and view all their finances in one place, but most importantly they can benefit from sharing tips and advice with other members. This works when users group their expenses in categories with tags or labels (and the program remembers what categories expenses belong to). Tips then show for those tagged purchases offering information such as how to get more value for money, favorite merchants or competitors providing better value, special deals, etc. The Tips section automatically recommends competitors based on feedback, repeat visits and lower average spend by other members. All users can submit tips or comment on existing ones, with the most popular pushed to the top so more members can view them.
There's also a master list of tags which displays total spend in each category, with members able to compare spending. A Goals section allows users to set specific savings goals and Wesabe reminds users of their goals by displaying them on screen and matching them with customized savings tips. There's also a forum where users can meet other members with identical goals to ask questions and share progress.
