Personal Finance Software for 2010

Now more than ever personal finance software can prove an invaluable tool for getting finances back on track and saving for the future. There are a number of excellent programs that can help and we've described our recommendations below.

This simple to use program created by Jesse Mecham is very popular at the moment. It's more than personal finance software - it's a money management system with an underlying methodology which works to get individuals out of debt and living within their means.

Users need to follow budgeting rules as set out by the methodology and allocate spending to different categories, working towards only spending what they've already earned and building up savings. YNAB is very user-friendly, with a user manual, tutorials and free online coaching available.

Bonus extras thrown in free include debt spreadsheet, tax forecaster, retirement planner, mortgage analyzer and car maintenance schedule.

YNAB 3 is priced at $49.95 . See our YNAB Review for more details.

Quicken Deluxe this year celebrates its 25th anniversary of being a leader in personal finance software. Deluxe is packed with lots of useful tools (many features are never commonly used but it's good to have them anyway) and this year's version has a more customizable interface. The checkbook register look is well-liked by users. It must be said however that all the Quicken offers that keep popping up (upgrades, Quicken credit card ads) are never popular - especially those extra icons that end up on your desktop, but these can be ignored.

We particularly like the planners (retirement planner, college savings planner) and the tax tools which enable easy export to TurboTax for do-it-yourself yearly income tax returns and recommend it for those reasons.

See our Quicken Deluxe 2012 product page or Quicken Deluxe 2012 Review page for more product details.

Mvelopes Personal is another envelope budgeting based system like YNAB, but Mvelopes works completely online. We like it for the great ease of access (any PC with internet, cellphone, blackberry) to your financial accounts and transactions. It's great to be able to check before you buy something what your bank balances are and whether or not your budget allows for more spending. That in itself can end up avoiding a lot of those impulse buys.

The interface is very clear - different spending envelopes (which you set up beforehand) keep a running tally of what's available to spend. If you overspend in one area you can cut back in another to make up for it.

Bill pay is included in the price (up to 15 payments per month) and customer support is also included (by chat or email). The most cost effective plan is a 2 year one (which works out to $7.90/month) but to start with you can get a free one month trial to see if you like it. See our Mvelopes Personal Review for more product details.
