1. QuickBooks Pro 2012

There are six versions of QuickBooks small business accounting software. Simple Start Plus Pack ($99) is for first time users. Premier Editions (RRP $399) offers industry-specific versions (General Business, Contractor, Manufacturing & Wholesale, Nonprofit, Professional Services, Retail). Enterprise Solutions (RRP $3,000 for 5 users) is for larger businesses and offers much more advanced features. There is also an Online QuickBooks product (Free, Basic or Plus versions) as well as a Pro for Mac 2011.

Main Benefits. QuickBooks Pro 2012 is the most popular program for its ease of use and excellent feature set. We like that you can easily identify tax-related income & expenses during the year and export tax data to TurboTax (or provide to your accountant) for tax returns. The 2011 version includes multiple invoice processing and a new Customer Snapshot view.

2. Peachtree Complete Accounting 2012

Peachtree accounting software comes in five versions. First Accounting (now free) is for small companies with more basic accounting needs. Pro Accounting (RRP $199) is the next version, offering more financial and business management features such as inventory and payroll. Premium (RRP $499) offers the same features as Complete but is more comprehensive with extras such as multi-company consolidations, advanced budgeting, serialized inventory and Crystal Reports 2008. Quantum (starts at $2,850 for 5 users) is their top-of-the-line product, designed for 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 or 40 users and provides all industry-specific functionality (manufacturing, construction, distribution and non-profit).

Main Benefits. Peachtree Complete Accounting is for those more comfortable working with accounting functions. The program offers more in-depth inventory capabilities such as FIFO/LIFO cost method, and 125+ reports. The time and billing feature offers time and expense tracking with time information flowing into invoices and paychecks. Expenses can also be linked to client invoices. Multiple billing rates are supported.

3. Avanquest Bookkeeper 2011

Avanquest Bookkeeper 2011 is a simpler program for small businesses who don't need in-depth inventory or reporting functionality.

Main Benefits. Avanquest Bookkeeper 2011 offers the main features needed for accounting such as sales & expense tracking, invoicing, credit card processing, payroll and reporting and is very competitively priced. Normally also comes with 125 free business checks and 3 months free credit card processing.

4. MYOB Premier 2008

MYOB accounting software comes in two versions. Business Essentials is their basic version (RRP $99).

Main Benefits. MYOB Premier Accounting is a full-featured accounting program and another very good option. It comes with the Accounting 101 Guide and more editable business templates (100+) to help users get started and set up easily. It provides advanced contact management, more flexible time billing features and more reports (211).
