1. QuickBooks Accounting Pro Edition 2009


There are six versions of QuickBooks small business accounting software. Simple Start Plus Pack ($99) is for first time users. Premier Editions ($359) offers industry-specific versions (manufacturers, contractors, retailers, professional services etc) and Enterprise Solutions ($3000 for 5 users) is for larger businesses and offers much more advanced features. There is also an Online QuickBooks version as well as a Pro for Mac 2009.

Main Benefits. QuickBooks Pro 2009 identifies tax-related income & expenses during the year with the use of tax categories. The program also assigns accounts to a specific line on tax forms, so all income & expenses are accurately categorized. Users can easily export tax data into TurboTax or provide to accountants for tax returns.


2. Peachtree Complete Accounting 2009


Peachtree accounting software comes in five versions. First Accounting ($69) is for small companies with more basic accounting needs. Pro Accounting ($169) is the next version, offering more standard features such as inventory and payroll. Premium ($499) offers the same features as Complete but is more comprehensive with extras such as multi-company consolidations and serialized inventory. Quantum ($3,950 for 10 users) is their top-of-the-line product, designed for 10, 15, 20 or 30 users and provides all industry-specific functionality (manufacturing, construction, distribution and non-profit).


Main Benefits. Peachtree Complete Accounting offers job costing, in-depth inventory capabilities and 125+ reports. The time and billing feature offers time and expense tracking with time information flowing into invoices and paychecks. Expenses can also be linked to client invoices. Multiple billing rates available.


3. Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2008


Microsoft Office Accounting comes in 4 versions. Accounting Express is the more basic product (free). Accounting Standard ($99) allows budget creation and cash flow forecast, with a few reports (30). Professional Plus ($299) has the same features as Professional but the charges for the payroll and online marketplace services are included for 12 months.

Main Benefits. Microsoft Office Accounting Professional fully integrates with other Microsoft Office applications and so will have a familiar feel for many users. It offers Paypal transaction processing. There is a credit reporting service and it is possible through the program to list your products and services on online marketplaces such as eBay (additional charges for both).


4. MYOB Premier 2008


MYOB accounting software comes in two versions. Business Essentials is their basic version ($99).

Main Benefits. MYOB Premier Accounting is a full-featured accounting program. It comes with the Accounting 101 Guide and more editable business templates (100+) to help get you started. It provides advanced contact management, more flexible time billing features and more reports (211).
