How Does YNAB Pro Compare?
YNAB is a personal budget program that works like the basic "envelope" budgeting system but provides a lot more features and teaches you a new way of dealing with your finances. This great money management tool is based on the concept that you only spend money you've already earned - and aims to get you out of debt as soon as possible.
The YNAB application is built and works around four principles:
Stop living paycheck to paycheck. YNAB helps you learn to live on last month's paycheck. You do need one month's saved salary to best use the system but the YNAB methodology helps you work towards that.
Give every dollar a job. All your income must be allocated into specific expense categories (rent, groceries, holidays) before you spend it.
Prepare for rain. Anticipate occasional unexpected expenses and allocate money for these monthly.
Roll with the punches. If you over-spend one month, then there's that much less available to spend the next. YNAB makes necessary adjustments to get you back on track for the following months' budgeting.
YNAB Pro is a very easy to use application that helps you plan and track expenses. It can be installed within just a few minutes and instructions are provided every step of the way as well as an in-depth user guide. There's a very intuitive user interface and an auto-suggest budgeting tool to help get you started if you need it. It can take as little as 10 minutes a week to enter income & expenses and 30 minutes a month to allocate spending money to each category.

YNAB provides default spending 'envelopes' (rent, groceries, entertainment) to start with but these can be edited and more added. Amounts are then allocated to the categories with running totals updating with each transaction. If there's an overspend in one area one month, then the following month there's less available in that category or you need to move amounts from one envelope to another to cover the amount. This all works towards making sure users spend within their means. |
There are three budgeting reports available (Spending by Category, Total Spending, Current Balances) which make it easy to see your progress.

There is a more basic version of YNAB, priced at $24.95, which is a spreadsheet-based application (YNAB Pro is a Windows-based standalone application). It doesn't have some of the great features of YNAB Pro such as importing bank transactions, scheduling recurring transactions, splitting transactions, transaction flags, suggestive budgeting, and the reports, for example.
YNAB Pro comes with a 60-day money back guarantee. It's compatible with Windows 98 or later and Vista. It's not yet compatible with Mac, but this is being worked on.
In comparison, the Quicken and Microsoft Money personal finance programs contain budgeting features too, but they don't have the YNAB methodology, ensuring you're living on last month's paycheck rather than this month's, which we'd say is the main benefit of using YNAB.
And while it's always possible to use Excel for basic budgeting, for only $44.95 for all the features of YNAB, there's really no reason not to try it.

It offers quite a few more features such as online bill payment and access to your financial data from anywhere with an internet connection (as well as your mobile phone), but it is correspondingly more expensive starting at $7.90/month.
