How Does YNAB 3 Compare?
YNAB is a personal budget program that works like the traditional "envelope" budgeting system but provides a lot more features and also teaches you a new way of dealing with your finances. This great money management tool is based on the concept that you only spend the money you've already earned - and so aims to get you out of debt as soon as possible.
The YNAB application is built and works around four principles:
• Stop living paycheck to paycheck. YNAB helps you learn to live on last month's paycheck. You need one month's saved salary to best use the system but the YNAB methodology helps you work towards that.
• Give every dollar a job. All your income must be allocated to specific expense categories (rent, groceries, holidays) before you start spending it.
• Prepare for rain. Anticipate occasional unexpected emergency expenses and allocate money for these monthly beforehand.
• Roll with the punches. If you over-spend one month, then there should be that much less available to spend the next. YNAB makes necessary budget adjustments to help get you back on track for the following months' budgeting.
YNAB 3 is very easy to use. It can be installed within just a few minutes and instructions are provided every step of the way as well as an in-depth user guide. We've found the user interface to be quite intuitive. It can take as little as 10 minutes a week to enter your income & expenses and 30 minutes a month to allocate spending money to each category in your budget.
YNAB provides default spending 'envelopes' or categories (such as rent, groceries, entertainment, etc) to start with - these can be edited and extra added. Accounts are created and salary and income is entered. The idea is then to allocate spending amounts to the budget categories for the upcoming month.
Expenses ('outflows') are entered into the program's register on a regular basis against the different categories. Your budget updates automatically. If there's any overspend in one area one month, then the following month there will be less available in that category or you will need to move amounts from one 'envelope' to another to cover the missing amount. This all works towards making sure you spend within your means.
There are a number of budgeting reports available (e.g. Spending Trends, Spending Totals, Net Income & Worth) which make it easy to see your progress. You can see your data in both table and graph format at the same time.
